AC Milan CEO Lauds 29th Italian Super Cup Victory Over Rivals Juventus as Sweetest Yet

Published on: 24 December 2016

"?Adriano Galliani has revealed that AC Milan's Italian Super Cup triumph over Juventus will be one he cherishes above all others for the rest of his life.

The Milan CEO watched on as the Serie A side came from behind to win their first Super Coppa title in five-and-a-half seasons in the 4-3 penalty shootout victory over the Italian league champions.

Goalkeeping wonderkid Gianluigi Donnarumma saved Juventus' fifth spot kick from Paulo Dybala that allowed team mate Mario Pasalic to net the winning penalty and, speaking to "?Milan TV after the match, Galliani expressed how emotional the victory for Vincenzo Montella's men had left him.

He said: "There is joy, emotion, tears, everything. We won silverware again five years after the Supercoppa against Inter. This is the 29th trophy of the Silvio Berlusconi era, plus 16 runner-up spots.

"I will keep this trophy in my heart more than any other, but I'll tell you why another time."

The triumph in Doha was all the more pleasing after Milan had endured a barrage of pressure from Juventus in the opening 45 minutes, and headed into the interval at 1-1 after Gianluigi Bonaventura had cancelled out Giorgio Chiellini's volleyed opener.

The sides were at level pegging throughout the second half and 30 minutes of extra time, before Mario Mandzukic's miss and Dybala's saved effort ensured Milan were victors on the night.

Donnarumma dedicated the win to outgoing club president Silvio Berlusconi, who is expected to sell the club to a Chinese-based consortium in the coming months, and Galliani joined the young shot stopper in praising Berusconi for the manner in which he had led the Italian outfit forward during his tenure as owner.

Galliani added: "It's always wonderful to win, whether as favourites or underdogs. President Berlusconi was very happy and he deserves it for all the economic, moral and other efforts he has put in over the years."
