The Nigerian leader has applauded the performance of the Golden Eaglets at the 2015 Fifa U17 World Cup, and feels the round leather game ‘loves him’.

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has commended the country’s U17 team for emerging as world champions at the 2015 Fifa U17 World Cup in Chile.

Coach Emmanuel Amuneke’s boys defeated Mali 2-0 at the Estadio Sausalito, Viña del Mar to successfully defend their title and also win the championship for a record fifth time.

Speaking after receiving the 2015 Glo/Caf Platinum award for good leadership, President Buhari, who was military Head of State when the Golden Eaglets won the inaugural edition of the Fifa U17 World Cup in China in 1985 expressed his delight following the twist of fate.

“Thirty years after the first victory, Nigeria won again last year. What a fabulous coincidence. I think football loves me,” said President Buhari in a official statement.

Meanwhile, the Golden Eaglets and the Dream Team VI will be hosted by the President on January 21, 2016, at the Presidential Villa alongside other athletes who made the country proud in 2015.
