Referee Daniel Akure got the beating of his life at the Warri City Stadium and even back at his hotel after angry fans vented their frustration on him following Warri Wolves 1-1 home draw with league leaders Wikki Tourists Sunday.

The draw ensured Wikki returned to the summit of the Nigeria league.

Eye witnesses also told AfricanFootball.com that one of Akure’s assistants was only spared such assault after he was smuggled into the team bus of visiting Wikki.

“The referee got the beating of his life, while his assistant only escaped such treatment when he was smuggled into the team bus of the visiting team and quickly discarded his uniform,” one eye witness told AfricanFootball.com

It was further gathered that attacks on referees remain the order of the day, but officials are desperate to keep such incidence from the media.

Recently the referees threatened to boycott matches in the country's third-tier league, the Nationwide League, on account of the various attacks against them by fans at match venues.
