Wednesday June 3 will go down as one of the darkest days in the history of Accra and Ghana as a nation.

For the umpteenth time, floods hit Accra and this time its full effect was felt as a fuel station exploded, resulting in the death of over 90 people who went there to seek shelter.

Three days after the disaster, hundreds homeless former Black Stars skipper Stephen Appiah accompanied by Founder of Civil Society Organisation New Africa Ghana and President of Petronia City Development, Nana Kwame Bediako made their way through the back streets of Adabraka, one of the suburbs worst hit to deliver some relief items to the victims of the flood.

According to Appiah, the general public should lend a helping hand to the victims of the flood in what he described as a “difficult time” for the nation.

“What I have witnessed here today is really sad, the manner in which the people showed their appreciation and happiness just because of the water we have provided for them is touching.

“I want to use this opportunity to tell my fellow Ghanaians that in our own small way we can help these people because these are hard times,” a distraught Appiah told Citi News.

He further stated that for such an incident to be avoided in future a change in attitude is required from the general public.

“We always blame people when such incidents occur but we need to make things right and that requires that we take responsibility.

“The dumping of plastic bags and rubbish on the streets and into our gutters is one of the major reasons why such tragedies occur and we all know that when this happens it will be difficult for the water to escape.

“We have to make a conscious effort to do the right thing. We don’t always have to wait for these things to happen, we need to change our attitude,” he said.
