Equatorial Guinea facing HEAVY CAF sanctions over crowd trouble

Published on: 05 February 2015

Equatorial Guinea are facing HEAVY sanctions from CAF following a riotous semi-final contest against Ghana in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday.

The home fans turned the game on its ugly head when they threw bottles and missiles at the Ghana bench and its supporters after conceding three goals.

The shambolic scene led to the game being held up for over 30 minutes with helicopter hovering above the pitch to restore calm.

The nasty episode has once again brought African football under negative spotlight with the continent’s governing body expected to come down heavy on the emergency host.

The hosts were fined $5,000 for pitch invasion during their contentious quarter-final win over North African side Tunisia.

But with the latest episode generating massive negative press around the world, the home side are likely to suffer hefty punishment.

Equatorial Guinea, who exceeded expectations by reaching the semi-finals, face the Democratic Republic of Congo in Malabo Saturday for third place.

However, after Thursday's shambolic scenes, it remains to be seen whether or not that match will be played at the venue.

They parachuted into becoming emergency host following the withdrawal of Morocco over Ebola fears.
