David James Advises Former Club Liverpool Not to Sign Mario Gotze

"?Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James has warned his old club not to pursue a move for Bayern Munich's out of favour play-maker Mario Gotze, according to "?Squawka

The German international has been heavily linked with an Anfield reunion with his former Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp, but James is unsure that the move would be a good one for his former club.

The ex-England goalkeeper believes that Gotze's injury record should dissuade Klopp from bringing the 23-year-old to Merseyside.

"Gotze has an injury history that's going to cause a problems. I don't know if he's going to be a good purchase", said the former Portsmouth stopper.

The German manager has already brought the high-tempo style that came to define his Borussia Dortmund side to Anfield, and it is for this reason that James believes Gotze would struggle if he joined the club.

"Liverpool don't seem to be able to carry unfit players "? you can't do it."

Daniel Sturridge has struggled to return the levels that Klopp's style demands, and James envisages the potential for Gotze to suffer similar issues.

"Liverpool are high intensity. Daniel Sturridge is a good example. He was breaking down "? and he looks like he nearly back to his best now "? but it's been a long long season for him."

Gotze has only played fourteen Bundesliga matches this season, a total he would need to improve upon vastly if he were to become a key part of his former manager's Anfield revolution.

However, Gotze flourished under Klopp at Signal Iduna Park, showing no signs that he could not handle the intensity demanded by a season of gegenpressing and counter-attacking.

In his final season under Klopp before controversially joining arch-rivals Bayern Munich in 2013, Gotze managed forty-four appearances, scoring fifteen goals, as Dortmund swept into the Champions League final and came second in the Bundesliga.

To that end, James' fears appear unfounded, and Klopp knows Gotze as well as anyone, so it appears unlikely that he would risk splashing such a large sum of money on a player unless he is completely certain he can handle the rigours of the Premier League.
