West Ham have had a £25m move rejected for the Bournemouth pair of Matt Ritchie and "?Callum Wilson, with news of the stunning and unexpected failed double-move emerging on Monday night.

"?Sky Sports report that the Hammers were told by Bournemouth that neither of the pair were for sale and, rather than bang their heads on a brick wall all summer, West Ham are said to have taken Bournemouth at their word and do not plan to make any further bids for the duo.

Wilson started last season like a flash, hitting five goals in his first six Premier League games, but suffered a horrible knee injury after that which ruled him out for the best part of the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old returned to first-team action at the start of April, but looked a shadow of the dynamic, decisive attacking threat he'd been at the start of the year. He has yet to score in a handful of substitute appearances and one start since his return, making him a risk for any club looking to buy him.

West Ham's co-owner had said last week: "We put in a bid today [Monday May 10] for €30m (£23.7m) for a player and other bids will be going in. We are going to make a £20m or £25m bid for a player in England this week. So whatever happens, we'll bring a top striker in."

It had been thought that the latter player may have been Liverpool's Christian Benteke, who is said to be unsettled after a poor first season at Anfield, but he could have been referring to the newly-revealed double-bid for the Bournemouth pair.
