Aston Villa Set for £75m Takeover and New Manager

"?Problem club Aston Villa could be set for a £75m takeover from a Chinese consortium and in the process could appoint Roberto Di Matteo as the club's new manager.

"?The Express believes that the takeover could be completed within days and certainly rubber-stamped by the end of the week according to club sources.

Owner Randy Lerner is believed to be more willing to strike a deal with the consortium than other potential buyers circling The Villans.

And The Express also believes that former Chelsea and Schalke manager Di Matteo is the man in line to replace the departed Remi Garde in the Villa Park hotseat, beating out competition from former Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson.

Lerner initially wanted £200m for the club that's been up for sale for the best part of two years, but investors baulked at the price until it was reduced to under £100m.

Lerner hit the headlines recently for locking horns with former FA chairman David Bernstein and former Governor of the Bank of England Lord King, prompting the resignations of the latter two over Lerner's stewardship.

It's been a sorry state of affairs for Villa who finished rock bottom of the Premier League with just three wins and 22 points from safety.

It's the club's first relegation from the top flight since 1987 and there's no guarantee Aston Villa can come back at the first attempt, with Fulham, Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers all struggling since they were relegated from the Premier League.

Should the Chinese takeover be completed, it is also believed that former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool director of football Damian Comolli will take the same position at the club.
