Al Khartoum FC coach, Kwesi Appiah is impressed with the level of competition in the ongoing CECAFA Kagame Cup.

The ex-Ghana coach made his tournament debut in the dugout guiding the Khartoum side to a 5-0 victory over Djibouti’s Telecom at National stadium, Dar es Salaam on Monday afternoon.

“I am impressed with the standard so far,” he told Kawowo Sports.

“All teams are displaying good football including Telecom which we have beaten today,” he added.

On the 5-0 score line inspired by ex-Coton Sport striker Ousmalia Baba, the Ghanaian said: “I don’t think we were much superior as the score line shows. Our opponents played equally well and gave us a good game. They did create chances but just failed to put them away.”

Appiah was excited by the kind of competition in the region which he said adds invaluable experience to the players especially the young ones.

“In West Africa, such a club competition isn’t in existence. It’s only the national teams that face off but to me, it’s a good tournament as it helps young players compete at international level and also gain experience.”

On who he expects to win the championship, Appiah said he is yet to identify the favourites so far but believes this Khartoum side will give it a go.

“I haven’t watched all sides in action and so am not in position to choose favourites. Nevertheless, we as Khartoum shall try to go as far as we can.”

Following his side’s huge win, Khartoum now sits second on the group A log with three points; three behind toppers Gor Mahia but the side has played a game less.
