Speaking with reporters in Lagos recently about the controversial Super Eagles hiring, Akanni stated that the current Super Eagles team needed superior team leadership, competency, and trust. He said that several former Nigerian players, especially the three players Emmanuel Amunike, Finidi George, and Alloy Agu, had these qualities by nature.

Akanni went ahead to advise the NFF not to look any further than the home front, for the next Super Eagles coach.

"Nigeria is blessed with several former players who have transmuted to qualify coaches in their own rights".

"At this crucial period and with weeks away from Nigeria's World Cup and AFCON qualification matches, the Super Eagles needs a local coach with experience as former players of the team".

"I want to tell you confidently that with Amunike, Finidi and Agu, the Super Eagles, shall fly higher again and qualify for the continental and global championships," Akanni, a former Lagos FA boss remarked.
