From losing the first leg 1-0 at the San Siro, AC Milan conceded two early goals, in the 12th and 22nd minutes to further put their hope of a comeback in doubt and when all thongs to be getting worse for the visitors, Stefano Pioli introduced Chukwueze at the start of the second leg to help capitalise on the one man advantage given to his team after the referee showed Roma's Mehmet Zeki Çelik the exit door in the 31st minute. However, all attempts proved abortive as Roma stood their ground, letting in just a goal at the closing stages of the game.

With Chukwueze's recent form for Milan, many expected him in the lineup considering the imporance of the game, but the coach had other ideas which eventually failed.

Defender, Matteo Gabbia scored Milan's only goal in the two legs against Roma as the Rossoneri leave Europe, shifting attention to the league where they will need more than a miracle to unseat current leaders, Inter Milan.
