Middlesbrough coach Micheal Carrick has revealed that everyone is “relaxed” over the contract extension of former Arsenal forward Chuba Akpom.

The striker only has six months remaining on his current deal, but the Championship club has a one-year clause they can trigger on his contract, which they’re sure to take.

That means he effectively still has 18-months left, giving the club time to negotiate over a possible extension with the striker.

Akpom has emerged as a new man this season, with the forward having revitalised his career at the Riverside.

A tally of 12 goals this campaign makes him the joint-top scorer in the division, with a hat trick in their 4-1 win over Wigan Athletic on Monday bringing him level with Viktor Gyokeres.

Carrick according to FootballLeagueWorld, joked that Akpom will be banging on his door for a new contract due to his good form.

However, he believes that there is no reason to rush into any decision, revealing his own relaxed mood regarding the situation.

“He’s just got himself a hat-trick so he’s going to be knocking on the door asking for one, isn’t he?!” said Carrick, via Teesside Live.

“I’m joking, of course. We’re relaxed about that and I’m sure that will be sorted in due course.”
