La Liga president Javier Tebas says he has met the ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Spain as he seeks to resolve a dispute involving Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe.

The controversy followed Mbappe’s reaction to a meme comparing him with Mao Zedong, who was described in the post as a “Chinese dictator”. His response caused discontent in China, with media reports suggesting that Spanish league matches could be removed from broadcasts in the country.

Tebas said La Liga had spent recent years developing relations with Chinese authorities, football organisations, audiovisual operators and businesses.

He added that he wanted the league’s partnership agreements with China to continue being successful.
