Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is set to miss the start of Udinese's 2026/27 Serie A campaign after suffering a shoulder injury, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
Udinese head coach Kosta Runjaic confirmed the setback during his latest press conference, with the injury also casting doubt over the Nigerian's availability for the Super Eagles' upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches.
According to Calciomercato, the Italian club has already intensified efforts to recruit another goalkeeper to provide cover while Okoye recovers from the injury.
"Maduka is injured. We've seen the quality he's shown on the pitch, and we're optimistic he can become one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A this season. He's had a shoulder problem, and I hope he can return as soon as possible," Runjaic said.
Reports indicate that the shoulder problem is the result of excessive workload, with the 26-year-old expected to miss Udinese's opening two league fixtures against Como and Monza later this month.
To address the situation, Udinese are reportedly close to securing the services of Norwegian goalkeeper Egil Selvik, who is expected to return to the club.
Selvik initially joined Udinese in 2025 before moving to Watford, but his return has become possible following Federico Ravaglia's transfer from Bologna to the English club.
Udinese hope to complete the deal quickly as they seek adequate cover during Okoye's expected spell on the sidelines.
