Sarfo Gyamfi: Ex-Kotoko great wants club to PULL out of Africa Champions League
Kotoko legend Sarfo Gyamfi says the club lacks the quality to compete in the CAF Champions League and wants them to drop out of the race to avert disaster.
The Ghanaian champions have stuttered in the opening matches of the Ghana Premier League where they lie at a disappointing 7th position, seven points adrift of leaders Ashantigold.
The Porcupine Warriors are looking flat, leaving their performance much to be desired ahead of their involvement in Africa elite inter-club competition.
Their fans are growing apprehensive and impatient with their lackluster performance in their 1-0 defeat to rivals Hearts of Oak last Saturday.
The ex-Ghana great nicknamed, ‘Black President’ fears for the worse if the club’s performance does not improve ahead of the Champions League.
“To be very honest with you it does not make sense to play in Africa with this kind of performance,” he fumed on Accra-based Oman FM
“It’s better to withdraw than being exposed and disgraced. We are struggling for cohesion and team spirit and we must admit that and work towards changing that.
“Even the two games we won against Inter Allies and BA United, we were outplayed. It was by some dint of luck.
“I don’t see why we should go to Africa with this kind of performance. It will be disastrous. I am telling you, it will be.”
Gyamfi’s call comes in the wake of a similar appeal from ex-Hearts defender Jacob Nettey who has advised the club to pull the plucks on their involvement in the CAF Confederation Cup over their recent slump in form.
The record Ghana Premier League holders have drawn bye in the competition following the withdrawal of Sierra Leonean side East End Lions.
