The 24-year-old centre-back has reportedly been informed of his impending call-up, with head coach Eric Chelle keen to reward his consistent performances at Ibrox and secure his international future with Nigeria.

Fernandez, who is eligible to represent the Super Eagles through his parents, has grown into a key figure under Danny Röhl in recent weeks, forming a solid defensive partnership and attracting attention for his composure at the back.

Nigeria is expected to participate in a four-nation friendly tournament in Turkey later this month, where they will face Jordan national football team, Iran national football team, and Costa Rica national football team. Fernandez is likely to get his first taste of international action during the competition.

He will, however, face stiff competition for places in the squad, with established defenders like Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey already key options in the team.

Fernandez began his career in England with spells at Brentford F.C. and Gillingham F.C., also featuring for lower league sides before earning a move to Peterborough United F.C.. His steady rise has now positioned him on the brink of international recognition in Nigeria.
