As reported by Liverpool Echo, Ben Godfrey quickly became a key Everton player following his £20million switch from Norwich last October. With his crunching tackles and lung-busting runs providing the Blues with much-needed energy, the centre-back soon became a fan favourite at Goodison Park.

However, when the transfer window came to a close on Tuesday evening, his importance for the campaign ahead went up a notch. Amid a summer search for a new right-back which yielded no new signing, the Toffees will get to January with captain Seamus Coleman, who turns 33, and Jonjoe Kenny, a player the Blues were willing to sell.

Everton also elected to let youngster Niels Nkounkou join Standard Liege on a season-long loan leaving Lucas Digne as the only recognised left-back at the club. That decision came just a week after teen prodigy Thierry Small joined Southampton after refusing the Blues offer of a new contract.

So, if Coleman or Digne, who both played for their national sides on Wednesday evening, pick up an injury or are suspended, it is likely Godfrey will come to Everton’s rescue to fill the full-back void.
