In a heartfelt message that appeared on his official Twitter account, Argentine striker Maxi Lopez announced he is retiring from football.

"Thank you all for helping me fulfill my dream. It was a beautiful journey!!!" the player wrote in a post. Lopez says goodbye to football after 20 years, a career that saw him don some of the most important jerseys in world football, including River Plate, him being a youth sector product of the Millionarios; Barcelona and A.C. Milan. He last played in Serie C, the Italian third division, for Sambenedettese.

He also represented Argentina at the youth level, donning the albiceleste for the Under-17 and Under-20 teams. Many people will also remember him due to his ex-wife, Wanda Nara, who gave him unwanted notoriety when he started seeing then Inter striker Mauro Icardi while still married to him. Icardi and Lopez used to be close friends, so the affair caused a stir on Italian media.
