Published on: 18 May 2023

Rivers United have won their last home match of the regular season by defeating Doma United in the Nigeria Premier Football League Match Day 16 rescheduled game on Thursday, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The 'Pride of Rivers' beat the Savannah Tigers by two goals to nil at the Adokiye Amiesmaka Stadium, Portharcourt to finish the season unbeaten at home.

Two first goals by Nwagua Nyima Nekabari and Albert Korvah secured all points for the defending champions in the group B encounter.

Coach Stanley Eguma started with the same team that secured the maximum points against Sunshine Stars three days ago and they didn't fail to deliver.

The host had the momentum with Albert Korvah, Mohammed Shirz and Joseph Onoja all coming close to scoring within the first ten minutes of the game.

In the 19th minute, the deadlock was finally broken when Nwagua put the Portharcourt side in front through Onoja Joseph's assist.

After some resistance from the visiting team the second goal came a minute before half time as Korvah scored a screamer to give the home team a comfortable lead into the second 45 minutes.

Coach Akinlade made double substitution for the Tigers as Bidemi and Ufere made way for Emmanuel Luke Ogwuche and Usman Musa.

Emmanuel Luke almost made an instant impact as his 48 minute strike hit the bar as Doma sought to get into the game.

Usman Musa nearly got a goal almost immediately after his shot was parried by goalkeeper Sochima Victor.

Luke few minutes later, pushed for a goal, but his attempt was futile as the visitors kept the ascendency in search for a goal.

Doma United continued as the better side in the half and got a goal in the 85th minute through Musa, but the assistant referee ruled the goal for offside.

All efforts to get a goal proved futile for the Gombe State based club as the tie ended 2-0 in favour of Rivers United.

The win keeps the reigning champions top of the league group B with three points ahead of second place, Lobi Stars while Doma United remain third with 26 points and need to win their last match to be able to secure the last Super Six spot of the group.
