Four-time Nigeria champions Kano Pillars will go top of the league standings should they beat rivals Enyimba in today’s rearranged league match-up which has been referred to as “Nigeria’s El Clasico”.
Pillars are on 24 points from 13 matches and they will topple Rangers at the summit of the table courtesy of a better goals’ difference as both teams will then be on 27 points apiece.
Kano’s darling club have been pumped up by a lone goal win at Sunshine Stars at the weekend.
They have been in closed camp since their return from Akure.
However, match winner in Akure Adamu Mohammed is again expected to start from the bench with younger strikers Omo Johnson and Emmanuel Edmund leading the Pillars attack.
Nigeria U23 goalkeeper Yusuf Mohammed was outstanding against Sunshine and he will again be rewarded with a start ahead of the more regular David Obiozor.
A win today and another at the weekend against Ikorodu United could well see Pillars open a healthy lead at the top of the league table.
Enyimba, on the other hand, were sluggish in a hard-fought 2-2 home draw with Lobi Stars, needing a late equaliser by skipper Chinedu Udoji.
‘The People’s Elephant’ are third from bottom of the table after they appear to have made this year’s CAF Champions League top priority at the expense of their domestic endeavours.
