NPFL: Owumi stresses contract and marketing rules

The 20 clubs competing in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) have been formally reminded of the necessity for all rights contracts to receive approval from the league before they become active, Nigeriasoccernet.com writes.

In response to recent breaches of the NPFL Marketing Codes, particularly through unauthorized Man-of-the-Match awards, Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi has emphasized the importance of adhering to Rule A7.6 of the NPFL Framework and Rules.

Owumi's memo to the clubs highlights that “All rights contracts to be entered into by any Club shall first be subject to the vetting and approval of NPFL, before execution. This rule serves as a safeguard to help prevent such abuses, and we expect strict adherence moving forward.”

The memo also addresses concerns regarding the increasing instances of unauthorized marketing activities. Owumi noted the problematic trend of unaffiliated brands being invited to league venues without proper authorization and utilizing these platforms for promotional purposes.

He stated, “We wish to draw your attention to the growing incidence of unauthorized ambush marketing activities at NPFL match venues by unaffiliated brands. These actions severely undermine the marketing efforts aimed at securing sponsorships for the league and go against the collective interests of the league and all participating clubs.”

Owumi concluded his communication with a call to action for the clubs, urging them to comply with the marketing codes to ensure the league’s integrity and commercial value. “We are pleased to see our clubs actively seeking to enhance their revenue streams. However, it is crucial that all marketing activities conducted at your match venues receive proper authorization from the league. This will help maintain the integrity and commercial value of the NPFL,” he advised.
