NPFL: Gombe United bid league goodbye as Sunshine Stars keep hopes alive

It was a great step towards escaping the drop for Sunshine Stars as they picked the Maxim points on the road in far away North during their matchday 34 encounter with Gombe United at the Pantami Stadium, Gombe State, writes Nigeriasoccernet.com.

In fairy first 10 minutes, Sunshine Stars broke the deadluck through Promise Awosanmi who scored a beautiful free kick from outside the 18 yards with just 9 minutes into the game.

Despite Gombe United's push for the leveller, the Owena Waves added the second at the half-hour mark through Lucky Nwafor, scores remaining same at the break.

Both teams created a couple of chances in the second half with Sunshine Stars goalkeeper David Ariyo making a couple of saves to help his team to nan important away win as the battle to beat the drop continues.

Speaking immediately after the game, Sunshine Stars gaffer, Kennedy Boboye heaped praises on his players why stating that his team will continue to push until the end of the season.

"I'm glad that we picked the much needed points here today in Gombe. It's a result we so desire and I'm glad we got it done, Gombe United are not a bad side at all but that's football for you"

The defeat confirm Gombe United's relegation to the Nigeria National League having garnered just 25 points from 34 games played so far, 17 points adrift safety which makes it impossible for them to beat the drop even if they win their remaining 4 matches.

Next on the radar for the Stars is a midweek clash with Kano Pillars as the President Federation Cup reaches the quarterfinal stages.
