After couple of chances between the two sides in the tie there was nothing to separate the reigning champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL and the newly promoted side, Bayelsa United.

The match comes just a day after Pride of Rivers State, conquered another NPFL returnee, Bendel Insurance by a lone goal in another friendly fixture at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

Paul Acquah scored the all-important goal that secured the win, showing great technique to head home Ebube Duru’s left-wing cross in the 40th minute.

Seidu Mutawakilu stretched full length to his right to save the spot kick that could have denied Rivers a win in the 85th minute.

Earlier in the week, Rivers United had thumped Barzoh International 3-0 as they Rivers stepped up preparations for the resumption of competitive football at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

First-half goals from Albert Korvah, Akande Suraj and a second half strike from Mohammed Shiraz gave Coach Stanley Eguma's side a comfortable win over the Owerri based FC.
