The Nationwide League One (NLO) has approved a return to a centralized, stadium-based format for the 2026 season, citing ongoing security challenges and the financial strain of maintaining a home-and-away structure, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The resolution was reached during the league’s Annual General Meeting held virtually on Saturday, February 28, 2026. Officials explained that the decision forms part of efforts to tackle operational difficulties that have troubled clubs in recent campaigns.

Under the revised structure, fixtures will no longer be played across individual club venues. Instead, designated stadiums will host matches throughout the season, with the league confirming that details of the approved venues will be communicated in due course.

During deliberations, delegates also called for an extension of the registration fee deadline, noting that several clubs are currently facing financial constraints. League management is expected to review the request and provide further clarification.

According to administrators, the centralized model is aimed at cutting travel costs, tightening security arrangements on matchdays, and creating a more organized environment that is attractive to broadcast partners and fans.

In recent years, the NLO has struggled with funding issues and safety logistics, prompting repeated calls from stakeholders for structural adjustments to safeguard the sustainability of Nigeria’s third-tier competition.

League officials described the shift as part of a broader reform agenda focused on stabilizing operations, improving governance standards, and building a stronger foundation for clubs ahead of the 2026 season.
