Virgil van Dijk is back with the Dutch national team. The thirty-year-old center defender was sidelined for months with a serious knee injury, but now has to help the Dutch national team with a ticket for the World Cup. Van Dijk remains the first captain of the Dutch national team and will face Norway tomorrow.
"It feels like old times to be back," said Van Dijk at the press conference. "I'm really happy to be back and working with the boys towards an important pot." Van Dijk denies that he and his teammates previously wrote off Van Gaal as the new national coach. "We had a clear conversation and gave our opinion, but no names were put forward or written off. The choice of the KNVB was to appoint Frank de Boer. Unfortunately, that did not go as desired."
Van Dijk watched the last European Championship with pain in his heart. He had to miss the tournament because of that serious injury. "That was very hard," he recalls. "During the game against the Czech Republic I did throw things, yes. For me the disappointment was just as big as with the other boys," says the fully recovered defender.
Van Dijk is curious about the fresh start under Van Gaal. "He has a lot of experience and certainly brings something extra with him. Everyone is sharp, we are looking forward to it."
