On Friday afternoon, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC shocked MLS by announcing the departure of head coach Marc Dos Santos.

Yes, it was one day after they had lost 4-3 in the preliminary round of the Canadian Championship against Pacific FC of the Canadian Premier League, a team coached by veteran MLS defender Pa-Modou Kah. They are, however, eight games undefeated in league action coming into Sunday's showdown at BC Place versus Real Salt Lake.

This current stretch, however, is deceptive, according to Whitecaps FC sports director and CEO Axel Schuster. They've earned five draws and three victories since going winless for eight games from mid-May to early July. They're also in 10th place in the Western Conference playoff race, three points off of their first appearance in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs since 2017.

When it was all said and done, Schuster felt that “this idea needed another push, that this project needs some fresh life.” Dos Santos was fired, as is customary in similar situations.
