Super Eagles combative midfielder Mikel Agu as called on the national team to prove that they are worthy ambassadors of the country by making the country proud at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Agu, an integral part of the team who didn’t make the final cut, expressed confidence in the ability of the Super Eagles and is optimistic of a good outing for the country.

“I know the ability of this team and the immense potential it has. I’m confident that the typical Nigerian spirit will see the players through even though many people are not giving them the benefit of the doubt probably because of the unfavourable friendlies’ result. I say let’s wait and see but I’m convinced they will surprise a lot of us,” he said.

The FC Porto player, who played last season on loan at Turkish Super Lig side Bursaspor, is also confident of making a return to the team after the World Cup.

“I quite understand the decision of the manager. He couldn’t take more than 23 and to even be among the last 25 was an honour for me considering the quality of players we have in Nigeria. I will continue to work hard to get back into the team and I will take my opportunities when they come,” he added.

On his club future, Agu is adamant he won’t be returning to Bursaspor.

“I will return to Porto for pre-season and see what plans the club has for me but one thing that I’m sure of is that I won’t be returning to Bursaspor. I will take my chances at FC Porto or go elsewhere in Portugal but Bursaspor is not a part of my future. It is in my past now.”

Currently, Agu is on holidays in Europe with his family and relishing the time spent with them.

He said: “As a footballer, you don’t get to spend as much time as you want with your family because you’re constantly on the road. But I have enjoyed the past few days with my wife and son. I’m loving every minute of it before I have to go back to work. For now, it is family time.”
