Mexico cruise past South Africa to reach knockouts

Mexico qualified for the knockout stages of the men's Olympic football tournament after beating South Africa 3-0 in a game that saw both sides reduced to 10-men.

Alexis Vega put Mexico ahead on 18 minutes with a tap-in from close-range. Luis Romo doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time.

Repo Malepe was dismissed on 57 minutes following a VAR check, after initially being shown a yellow card.

Henry Martin added Mexico's third on 60 minutes before the numbers became even when Carlos Rodriguez was sent off for Mexico.

That victory put Mexico through with a second-place finish in Group A, behind Japan who finished with a 100% record.
