Manchester City Closing in on an £85m Double Swoop for Two Defenders

Published on: 12 June 2016

Pep Guardiola has identified two centre-backs, John Stones and Aymeric Laporte, as his main transfer targets this summer, according to "?Manchester Evening News.

The deals for the Everton man Stones and Athletic Bilbao's Laporte could cost the club as much as £85m.

John Stones is set to be available for about £45m with Laporte having a release clause of £39m in his contract.

Even with the vast array of defenders already on the books at City with Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi. Guardiola is not looking for just one of the two targets, he wants to bring in both.

Everton man John Stones is being lined up as a replacement for the outgoing Martín Demichelis and Mangala who is expected to leave during the summer making room for the Englishman.

Guardiola has pinpointed his defence as the area that needs the most work and wants to play Laporte in the left back position to try and solidify that side of the defence.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Everton have become resigned to the fact Stones will be leaving this summer and any transfer might not have to wait until after the Euros.

Manchester United are also said to be interested in the player but have not made any move for the 22-year-old.

Laporte, also a 22-year-old, has represented France at youth level, but is yet to make his senior debut and is not part of the squad in Euro 2016 this summer.

The Frenchman made 26 appearances for Bilbao in La Liga this season managing to get his name on the score-sheet three times.
