Liverpool are prepared to offer Virgil van Dijk a new contract, but the club will only act if the experienced defender continues to perform at a high level.

Sources have told Football Insider that Liverpool could extend the Netherlands international’s current deal, which is due to expire, provided he maintains his impressive form.

Head coach Andoni Iraola still views Van Dijk as a key part of his plans. Although Liverpool have delayed making a decision on the 35-year-old’s future, growing interest from other clubs could encourage the Merseyside side to resolve the situation quickly.

Van Dijk has made six appearances in all competitions this season and has not recorded a goal or an assist.
