Reflecting on Pedro Chirivella’s 2020 departure from the club, the Liverpool ECHO have confirmed that the Spaniard turned down a five-year deal to stay at Anfield.

The midfielder, now 24, was picked up by French side Nantes last summer. Having helped guide them through a relegation play-off last season, Chirivella now finds himself mid-table in the early stages of the new Ligue 1 campaign.

However, in an alternative reality, he could have been relatively involved for Liverpool last season. A defensive midfielder by trade, he was the most obvious cover for Fabinho — when the Brazilian got moved into defence, it would have been little surprise to see Klopp turn to Chirivella. The offer of the five-year contract certainly suggests a degree of trust was there.

The former Valencia youth prospect certainly has talent, which has been evidenced by the speed with which he has become a regular in France; however, this consistent playing time also goes some way to justifying Chirivella decision to leave Liverpool.
