A court spokesman in Munich announced Thursday that Germany's 2014 World Cup champion Jerome Boateng has filed an appeal against his assault conviction and punishment of 1.8 million euros ($2 million).

Both Boateng's lawyer and the state prosecutor have challenged the judgment, according to a spokeswoman for Munich regional court told AFP subsidiary SID.

Boateng was clearly shaken a week ago after being found guilty of beating and insulting his former girlfriend, the mother of his twin kids, while on vacation in the Caribbean in 2018.

The prosecutor had requested the court to give Boateng a suspended 18-month jail term and a fine of 1.5 million euros, but when the judge handed down his decision last Thursday, the former Bayern Munich defender escaped prison.

Boateng, 33, who joined Lyon from Bayern Munich at the beginning of the month and made his debut off the bench last Sunday, rejected the claims.
