Their opening performance against Fiorentina established the tone for the campaign. Roma found the net four times without reply, securing a convincing victory in the first round of the Italian championship. They then repeated that scoreline in their next match, this time on the road against Lecce.
Although large-margin victories are not unusual over the course of a league season, Roma’s achievement is notable because of the way the two results came consecutively at the start of the campaign. The club had never previously opened a Serie A season with two wins classified as emphatic victories by a margin of four goals or more.
The early results also represent an impressive start to Gasperini’s spell in charge of Roma. His team have begun the new league campaign with an attacking approach that has produced eight goals across their first two matches, while their defence has yet to concede.
Roma’s next assignment will provide a different test. On Saturday, 5 September, they are due to face Atalanta, the club previously managed by Gasperini, in the next round of Serie A.
That meeting will bring the Roma manager up against his former club as his new team attempt to extend the strongest opening run in their history. Having already secured two victories by four-goal margins, Roma will now look to maintain their momentum when Atalanta visit them in the third round of the Italian championship.
