Fulham are preparing a new long-term contract for Nigeria international Calvin Bassey as they seek to secure the defender’s future at Craven Cottage.
The Premier League club are understood to be working on improved terms for the 26-year-old centre-back, who has one year remaining on his existing agreement. Fulham also hold the option to extend that deal by a further 12 months, which would keep Bassey at the London club until the summer of 2028.
According to TEAMtalk, the Cottagers are nevertheless ready to offer Bassey a fresh long-term contract. The move reflects his growing importance to the team and Fulham’s desire to retain a player who has become a central figure in their defence.
Bassey has established himself as one of the leading defenders at the club and is regarded as one of the Premier League’s top-performing defenders. His versatility has also made him an important member of the squad, with the Nigeria international able to operate in more than one defensive role.
He joined Fulham from Ajax in July 2023 after the London club agreed a move for the defender from the Dutch giants. Bassey produced an impressive campaign in 2024/25, when his performances earned him Fulham’s Player of the Season award.
The defender has made a strong start under new manager Alvaro Arbeloa this season. He has started all three of Fulham’s Premier League matches since the Spaniard took charge, underlining his status as a first-choice player in the side.
Bassey has made 105 appearances for Fulham in all competitions since arriving at Craven Cottage. His regular involvement and importance to the defensive structure have now prompted the club to consider securing his services beyond the end of his current contract.
The proposed agreement would give Fulham greater certainty over Bassey’s future and could prevent the club from entering the final stages of his existing deal without a new arrangement in place. For Bassey, it would represent recognition of the influence he has developed since moving to England from Ajax.
The defender’s future has also attracted attention following Fulham’s recent matches. He was reported to have been disappointed by the club’s defeat by Chelsea, although he has continued to feature prominently at the beginning of Arbeloa’s tenure.
Fulham’s discussions over a new contract come as the club look to build around established players, with Bassey now firmly regarded as a key part of their defensive plans.
