Felix Agu is set to return to training with Werder Bremen after spending two weeks on the sidelines due to injury, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

It has been a difficult campaign for the defender, who has spent more time recovering from injuries than playing on the pitch this season. An ankle injury suffered last October ruled him out until early February, forcing him to miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which would have been his debut tournament with the Nigeria national football team. The setback also led to him missing 13 matches for the Bundesliga side.

Shortly after returning to action, Agu suffered another blow when he picked up an adductor injury during the warm-up ahead of Werder Bremen’s clash with FC St. Pauli on February 22. Although sporting director Peter Niemeyer initially suggested a quick recovery, the defender has already missed the club’s last two fixtures.

However, his comeback now appears close.

“If everything goes optimally over the next couple of days, Felix (Agu) and Samuel will return to partially integrated training on Thursday. It's still a few days too early for Couli, and we have to wait and see with Jovan,” the coach said.

The schedule means Agu will participate in light training sessions this week as he gradually rebuilds his match fitness. As a result, he is expected to miss the upcoming Bundesliga clash against FSV Mainz 05 this Sunday but could return to the squad for the away trip to VfL Wolfsburg.

Agu’s impending return could also provide a boost for the Super Eagles. The defender earned his first national team call-up under head coach Eric Chelle, although recurring injuries have limited his involvement.

With the 26-year-old nearing full fitness, there could be a temptation to include him in Nigeria’s squad for upcoming international friendlies later this month. However, Werder Bremen may prefer a cautious approach and could seek an agreement with the Super Eagles’ coaching staff to allow Agu to skip the March internationals to avoid another relapse and focus on the final stages of the club season.

Regardless of the decision, Agu will be determined to put his injury problems behind him and establish himself in the national team setup.
