Manager Pep Guardiola felt his Manchester City team came through a tough test as they secured top spot on Wednesday in their Champions League group.

The Premier League champions earned a favourable seeding in Monday's draw for the last 16 as they managed to come from behind to beat Hoffenheim 2-1.

Leroy Sane bagged himself a brace to ensure the Citizens where the ones who claimed the spoils against the Bundesliga outfit at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola was pleased to overcome a tough Hoffenheim side and feels his players deserves plenty of credit for their efforts in the European encounter.

He said: "We finished group stage in the best way. We're in the best 16 teams in Europe.

"It's a big compliment to everyone involved in the group because it was tough. It's more difficult in the Champions League because the opponents are so much better. If you sleep a little bit you are in Europa League.

"That's why I say again it is incredible when you get into the last 16 because it is so demanding."

City are 7/2 to win the Champions League this season, while they are 4/11 to win the Premier League title.
