Gernot Rohr: I didn’t see Super Eagles player in Aiteo Cup final

Nigerian National team coach Gernot Rohr has said he did not see a player who could make his Super Eagles from either Enugu Rangers or Kano Pillars during yesterday’s thrilling Aiteo Cup Final.

The coach also said there is still more work to be done on the pitch of the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba if it were to host a Super Eagles game.

Rangers staged a stunning comeback to beat Pillars 4-2 on penalties Wednesday in Asaba with Rohr watching from the stands.

“I am satisfied with the match, but I didn’t really see one player better than the players I have,” Rohr told SCORENigeria

“I saw somebody in the first half (Kano Pillars striker Nguwua Nyima), but I didn’t see him again in the second half.

“I saw some good players in the Rangers team in the second half, but I cannot say this must go to the Super Eagles.”

He also said the pitch at the stadium needs a lot more work to be up to standard.

“It’s a nice stadium but they have to work more on the pitch,” he said

“The pitch is not really good for Super Eagles games.”

Rohr equally said he would have wished the suspense-filled final at least went into extra-time.

“It was an interesting match with alot suspense. One team led 3-0 and they were the better team in the first half and then the other team came back in the second half,” he said of the absorbing cup final,” he commented.

“It was a big surprise.

“It showed that in football it is never finished, you have to fight to win the game.

“But I would have wanted extra-time. Penalties immediately, that’s cruel especially for the team who were losing.”
