The discussion surrounding the Super Eagles’ squad selection for their upcoming AFCON qualifiers continues to spark debate among fans, with some questioning coach Augustine Eguavoen's choices, Nigeriasoccernet.com writes.
However, former Super Eagles defender Gbenga Okunowo believes that while public opinions may be valid, it is ultimately the coach's strategy that should take precedence.
Fans have voiced concerns over the inclusion of certain players, such as Sadiq Umar, who has yet to score this season, and Kelechi Iheanacho, still adjusting to life at Sevilla.
In an interview on Brila FM's "No Holds Barred," Okunowo emphasized that the coach is the one with a clear vision and plan and that his decisions should be respected. “It’s African mentality. It is free to talk and people will always talk but only the coach knows what he wants,” Okunowo stated. “If he wins with the squad, nobody will complain, so let Eguavoen do his job.”
He further noted that criticism is not unique to African football and is a part of the global game. “People talk in Europe, too. If the players are performing well, they praise them; if not, they blame the coach.”
Discipline, punctuality, and commitment were other key elements Okunowo highlighted as vital for success. “The most important thing is discipline and arriving in camp on time. African teams should be scared of us; when we’re coming, they should be shaking.”
With Nigeria currently leading their qualifying group with 10 points, they need just one more point from their final two games to seal a place in the 2025 AFCON tournament.
