Sodje maintains that the task of appointing a coach for the men’s national team remains within the exclusive rights of the FA but stated only the most qualified candidate; Local or foreign, should get the nod especially with the current state of the team.

Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations after a defeat to Egypt in the second leg of the qualifiers. Caretaker Coach Samson Siasia was drafted to the team from the U-23s but could not undo the looming danger of another absence from the Afcon following the sudden resignation of Sunday Oliseh.
