Poch: Transfers not in my hands

Published on: 31 July 2019

A frustrated Mauricio Pochettino has intimated that he has no control over transfer dealings at Tottenham and is merely a coach.

Spurs, who famously did not sign anyone last summer but still managed to reach the Champions League final and finish in the top four in the Premier League, have only added two players to their squad since the end of last term.

Jack Clarke was signed from Leeds United only to be loaned back to the Championship side while Tanguy Ndombele has arrived from Lyon in a £55millon deal.

Pochettino appears to be annoyed by the lack of transfer activity this summer. He has sold Kieran Trippier and Vincent Janssen but Danny Rose and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, who were both expected to leave the club this summer, remain at Spurs.

"I am not in charge and I know nothing about the situation of my players," Pochettino said after the 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the Audi Cup.

"I am only coaching them and trying to get the best from them. These types of things will happen or not happen.

"Sell or buy players, sign contracts, not sign contracts - I think is not in my hands, it's in the club's hands and in Daniel Levy's hands. At the moment I am managing the team the best way possible.

"The club need to change my [job] title and description, no? My job now is to coach the team."

Spurs continue to be linked with Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon and Real Betis playmaker Giovani Lo Celso but they face a race against time as the transfer window shuts next Thursday.

Spurs are 1/2 to finish in the top four once again this season and 3/10 to beat Aston Villa on 10th August.
