The summer 2026 transfer window has highlighted the growing international influence of Algerian footballers, with five deals taking players to ambitious projects in the Premier League, Serie A, Ligue 1 and the Saudi Pro League.

The moves involving Jaouen Hadjam, Mohamed Amine Amoura, Yacine Titraoui, Rafik Belghali and Adil Boulbina also reflect a broader change in how Algerian players are viewed abroad. Hadjam earns Premier League opportunity with Brighton

Jaouen Hadjam’s move from Young Boys to Brighton is among the most notable deals involving an Algerian player this summer. The transfer is estimated at €13m, underlining the confidence placed in the left-back’s ability and long-term potential.

Hadjam combines physical power with pace and the capacity to repeat high-intensity efforts down the flank. His delivery from wide areas also gives him the ability to threaten opponents in the final third.

His acceleration, movement and ability to exploit space make him particularly suited to teams that press high and attack quickly in transition. Nice’s recruitment reflects a desire to improve its threat against compact defensive blocks.

Africafoot reported that there was significant competition for Amoura’s signature. Ait Djoudi believes the forward’s speed, movement between the lines and ability to attack space quickly could make him an important part of the Nice system.

Titraoui takes next step at RC Lens

Yacine Titraoui has moved from Charleroi to RC Lens for a fee estimated at €8m, continuing the midfielder’s steady rise in European football.

Titraoui can operate in a double pivot or as a box-to-box midfielder. His technical range allows him to contribute to the initial build-up, retain possession and move the ball forward with accurate vertical passes.

Ait Djoudi believes those qualities should help him adapt to the demands of French football. However, the move will also require Titraoui to improve the speed of his execution and cope with the greater intensity of Ligue 1.

The physical demands and tempo of the French top flight represent a significant challenge, but they could also accelerate his development within an ambitious RC Lens project.

Belghali remains in Serie A with Torino

Rafik Belghali has left Hellas Verona for Torino on loan in a deal understood to be worth €1m, with an option to buy set at €5m.

The Algeria international had attracted interest from several clubs, according to Africafoot, but chose to continue his career in Serie A. His versatility allows him to function in different systems, including a back three and a 4-3-3 formation.

Belghali is capable of covering the entire right flank and can contribute in attack through his runs and crossing. Ait Djoudi sees his continued exposure to Italian football as a valuable part of his development.

The coach believes Belghali must continue improving his management of space, crossing and one-on-one duels, while also making progress in the first phase of possession. His start at Torino has nevertheless been encouraging: he provided an assist on his first appearance.

Boulbina joins Al Diriyah in Saudi Arabia

Adil Boulbina has completed an estimated €12m move from Al Duhail to Al Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League.

Djamel Belmadi was opposed to the player’s departure, Africafoot reported, but Boulbina ultimately left the club. Born in 2003, the Algerian forward represents a substantial investment for Al Diriyah.

His game is based on direct running, creativity and the ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations. Boulbina can play on either flank or move inside, while his technical quality in tight areas gives him several ways to influence the final third.

Ait Djoudi has highlighted his versatility and his capacity to create opportunities as well as finish them. Boulbina made an encouraging start with his new club by scoring during his first official appearances.

Five moves, different ambitions

Slavia Prague go into the fixture with considerable confidence after recording two consecutive league victories.

They defeated local rivals Sparta Prague 3-0 before following that result with a 4-0 win against Zbrojovka Brno. Those performances have underlined the Czech club’s strength at both ends of the pitch, with Slavia showing attacking efficiency while also maintaining a strong defensive record.

They remain top of the domestic league after an unbeaten start to the season, having collected five wins and two draws from their opening seven matches.

Playing at home could further enhance Slavia Prague’s prospects, particularly given their recent attacking form at the Eden Arena.

Lens looking to recover

According to figures published by Goal, Guirassy now has 19 goals in 25 UEFA Champions League appearances for Dortmund. That tally puts him two goals clear of Lewandowski, who scored 17 times in the competition for the club.

The former Stuttgart striker has also moved into second place in Borussia Dortmund’s all-time UEFA Champions League scoring rankings. He is behind only Marco Reus, who finished with 24 goals in the competition for the club.

Guirassy joined Dortmund from Stuttgart in 2024 and has quickly established himself as one of the team’s most reliable attacking players. His latest performance further underlined his effectiveness on the European stage, where he has consistently delivered since arriving at the club.

At the age of 30, the Guinea international is continuing to build a significant legacy in Dortmund. His combination of goalscoring numbers, European performances and consistency has placed him among the most prolific forwards in the club’s recent history.

Adel Taarabt has retired from professional football at the age of 37, bringing to an end a 20-year career that took him from Lens to Sharjah via Tottenham, AC Milan and Benfica.

The Morocco international leaves behind the image of a gifted footballer whose dazzling ability was never consistently reflected in his career. His dribbling, inventive tricks and ability to produce skills few others could even imagine made him one of the most entertaining players of his generation.

But alongside those memorable flashes came a lingering sense of what might have been. Taarabt appeared to be a natural star, yet he never established himself over a sustained period at the biggest clubs he represented.

Martin Jol, his manager at Tottenham, called him “a magician” and believed no other player in England possessed comparable ability with the ball at his feet. At Spurs, Luka Modric – who would later win the Ballon d’Or – reportedly gave Taarabt the nickname “Zizou”.

Neil Warnock later captured the contradictions in Taarabt’s career in three words: “talented, exciting and frustrating”.

QPR brilliance

It was at Queens Park Rangers that Taarabt delivered the clearest evidence of his potential. He was named the Championship’s best player in 2011 after inspiring QPR to promotion to the Premier League.

The team was built around his creativity and freedom. Taarabt was given the responsibility of providing the inspiration, and his performances made him one of the most influential players in the division.

The expected higher-level breakthrough, however, never fully arrived. Taarabt later admitted that he had joined Tottenham too young and that the attractions of London had offered too many distractions.

His defensive work, fitness, nightlife, mood swings and inconsistency became as much a part of the conversation as his technical brilliance. There were occasional revivals, particularly during spells at Fulham and AC Milan, but they did not lead to the sustained impact many had expected.

By the time he joined Benfica, Taarabt was carrying eight kilos of excess weight. It took almost four years before he finally made his first-team appearance for the Portuguese club.

At Benfica, he eventually found a late form of redemption. Bruno Lage reshaped him into a more complete midfielder, capable of running and defending, suggesting that the artist had finally accepted the demands of modern football.

“It’s not the fault of others, it’s my fault,” Taarabt said when reflecting on his career.

Morocco career also fell short

His international record adds to the feeling of unfulfilled promise. Taarabt won 30 caps and scored four goals for Morocco – a modest return for a player of such natural quality.

His relationship with the Morocco national team was seriously damaged in 2011 when he left a training camp after learning that he would not start. The connection had to be repaired months later, and he returned to international football only after sending a letter of apology.

The wider circumstances did not always work in his favour. Taarabt’s peak came during a period of instability in Moroccan football, long before the organised and ambitious generation that emerged towards the end of the 2010s.

Even after his final appearances, he remained closely connected to the national team and continued to comment regularly on the development of the Morocco national team.

Taarabt cannot be ranked alongside Morocco’s greatest footballing legends in terms of achievement. Among the country’s most naturally gifted players, though, he retains a distinctive place. That contrast is what makes his career both compelling and frustrating.

Rayan Ait-Nouri made an immediate impact on his return to competitive football, setting up Erling Haaland in Manchester City's 2-0 Champions League victory at FC Porto on Tuesday. His late contribution could strengthen his case with both club manager Enzo Maresca and Algeria coach Brahim Hemdani.

The Algeria international had been left on the bench for Manchester City's first three Premier League matches of the season, but was introduced in the 75th minute in place of Phil Foden. Operating as a left wing-back in the 3-4-2-1 system adopted by Maresca during the closing stages, Ait-Nouri supplied energy, technical quality and attacking depth at a time when City were lacking an outlet on that flank.

He went close almost immediately after coming on, then tested FC Porto's defence again with a shot that narrowly missed the target. His most important contribution arrived in stoppage time, when he surged forward before delivering a precise cut-back for Haaland to convert and seal the victory.

The short appearance was enough to earn positive assessments from British football outlets. City Xtra gave him a rating of 6.5, while FotMob awarded him 7.3.

Ait-Nouri's performance represented a sharp contrast to a frustrating start to the campaign. The 25-year-old had not played a single minute in Manchester City's opening three league wins, with Josko Gvardiol among the players ahead of him in the pecking order.

His lack of opportunities had already attracted attention when Manchester United made enquiries about his situation towards the end of the transfer window. However, one productive 15-minute spell is not enough to guarantee a permanent change in the club's hierarchy. It has nevertheless reminded Maresca that he has an attacking option with qualities that are difficult to replace.

The timing is also significant for Ait-Nouri's competition with Jaouen Hadjam for a place in Algeria's starting XI. Hemdani has few specialist options at left-back or left wing-back, with Ramy Bensebaini and Ahmed Touba able to cover the position but not regarded as natural alternatives in the same way.

Hadjam had strengthened his position within the Algeria squad during the last World Cup, although he remained behind Ait-Nouri at that stage. The player offers greater defensive discipline, while Ait-Nouri has a clear advantage when it comes to taking on opponents, creating openings and influencing matches at the highest level of European football.

Their profiles remain difficult to compare. Ait-Nouri has Champions League experience and is part of the Manchester City set-up, while he also demonstrated during the World Cup that he could handle responsibility in an Algeria shirt through his work-rate and combative character.

Hemdani will almost certainly want to see greater consistency before making any definitive decision. Even so, the assist in Porto was an encouraging first signal. After being forced to wait for his opportunity, Ait-Nouri has reminded Manchester City and Algeria of what he can offer at exactly the right moment.

Cameroon head coach David Pagou has been forced to make an early change to his squad after Levante forward Karl Etta Eyong was ruled out through injury, with the decision to call up Alanyaspor striker Ivan Cedric Bikoue likely to intensify criticism of the Indomitable Lions’ selection policy.

The withdrawal comes only days before Cameroon begin their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Pagou’s original squad had already attracted strong criticism when it was announced, with supporters and sections of the local media questioning several of his choices.

Etta Eyong’s absence now means the coach must revise his plans before the next international gathering. Bikoue has been selected as his replacement, but that decision has immediately prompted further debate because the forward, who was born in Madrid, has not played a single minute for Alanyaspor this season.

That statistic has been highlighted by Cameroon supporters on social media. One fan expressed frustration at the decision, reflecting a wider dissatisfaction that has been building since Pagou named his 26-man group.

The coach has already faced accusations that he is favouring players from second divisions, reserve teams or leagues regarded as less competitive, while overlooking footballers with greater exposure to top-level football. Bikoue’s inclusion, despite his lack of playing time this season, is likely to reinforce that perception among Pagou’s critics.

The Indomitable Lions will have little room for error after failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Their squad announcement was already being closely examined, and Etta Eyong’s injury and Bikoue’s replacement call-up have created a fresh source of controversy before the campaign has even begun.

Ayyoub Bouaddi made an immediate impression on his UEFA Champions League debut for Manchester City, starting in the 2-0 win away to FC Porto and earning glowing praise from Erling Haaland.

The 18-year-old midfielder was selected alongside Enzo Fernandez for his first Champions League appearance with City and looked entirely comfortable despite the occasion and the hostile atmosphere at Estadio do Dragao. Bouaddi played for 75 minutes and showed the composure of a player already settled into the demands of top-level football.

Questions had surrounded the role he would be given within Manchester City’s sizeable squad, but his display in Portugal provided an emphatic early answer. His encouraging first appearances in the Premier League had already hinted at his potential, and he strengthened that impression against Porto.

Bouaddi completed 54 of his 55 passes, giving him a 98% success rate. He did not misplace a single pass in the Portuguese side’s half, while also making seven recoveries and one interception. He won two of his three defensive duels.

Those figures reflected a performance built on calmness and control rather than simply youthful enthusiasm. Bouaddi appeared untroubled by the surroundings and consistently made confident decisions in possession.

His contribution was also noticed by Haaland, who scored both goals in City’s victory.

“At training, he is incredible. I have just told the president. I think we have a gem,” said the Norway international.

Haaland did offer one light-hearted criticism, joking that Bouaddi should have passed to him when he was unmarked during the second half.

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca was equally impressed by the teenager’s performance.

“He is very good. Any player would have panicked, but he stayed calm. He is only 18, but he was excellent,” Maresca said at his news conference.

Speaking to Prime Video, he added: “His performance was incredible.”

The approval extended beyond the Manchester City dressing room. Former England striker Wayne Rooney, working as a pundit for the broadcaster, praised Bouaddi’s discipline and “the maturity needed to play in the role usually occupied by Rodri”.

One match alone cannot justify the reported £95m investment made by Manchester City. That fee has made Bouaddi the most expensive Moroccan player in history and the second-most expensive African player. However, his showing in Porto may already make the scale of that figure appear less daunting.

Bouaddi will need to maintain his level over a sustained period while dealing with fierce competition for places in Manchester City’s midfield. Nevertheless, he has made the strongest possible start by taking his opportunity immediately.

Maresca now has compelling reasons to continue placing his trust in the young midfielder.

Sporting CP and Galatasaray begin their UEFA Champions League campaigns on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, when they meet at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon in the opening round of the 2026-27 league phase. Both sides enter the new European competition with serious ambitions, but only one can claim the ideal start by taking all three points.

Sporting CP will look to build on an impressive run in Europe after reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League last season. That achievement has established the Portuguese club as one of the teams attracting attention in this year’s competition, and they will aim to justify that status in front of their home supporters.

The Lisbon club can also draw confidence from its recent record against Turkish opposition. Sporting have won four of their past five matches against clubs from Turkey, while their last three home games against Turkish teams have all ended in victory.

Each of those three wins also included at least three Sporting goals, a sequence that underlines the attacking threat Galatasaray will have to contain at Estadio Jose Alvalade. Sporting will hope that their strong home record in this fixture context can help them start the league phase positively.

Manager Rui Borges has made the priority clear, calling for “une bonne prestation et, surtout, une victoire” a good performance and, above all, a victory.

The Istanbul side won three of their first four meetings with teams from Portugal, but have since gone five matches without a victory in this fixture group. That run consists of one draw and four defeats, leaving Galatasaray with the task of reversing a difficult trend in Lisbon.

They will need to find the resilience required to withstand a Sporting side confident in its recent European form and eager to make home advantage count. Galatasaray already know some of the challenges that await them later in the league phase: following their trip to Lisbon, they will host FC Barcelona, travel to Lille and then welcome Stuttgart.

The opening fixture therefore carries significance beyond the immediate contest. In the league-phase format, every point can influence the final standings and the battle for qualification places.
