The victory ended Leverkusen's three-game winless run in the league.

Boniface made amends for his ninth-minute penalty miss by scoring the winner, taking his tally to five goals in seven league appearances this season.

The Nigerian forward was replaced by Patrick Schick with 10 minutes remaining.

Compatriot Nathan Tella came on for Jeremie Frimpong in the 80th minute.

The win boosts Xabi Alonso's side, who had struggled to find consistency in recent weeks.
