President Muhammadu Buhari has hailed the Super Eagles on their qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

A 1-1 draw recorded by the Super Eagles of Nigeria saw them clinch a ticket for the 2019 AFCON after missing out on the last two editions in 2015 and 2017.

Nigeria join Uganda, Mali and Morocco to have qualified for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.

The Eagles lead Group E with 10 points from five matches after they were held to a 1-1 draw by home team South Africa in Johannesburg.

An own goal by Buhle Mkhwanazi off a Samuel Kalu’s cross in the ninth minute of the match gave the Super Eagles the lead, but an easy tap in from Lebo Mothiba in the 26th minute earned South Africa a share of the spoil from the matchday 5 encounter.

“The President joins millions of football-loving Nigerians in commending the team for their spirited and disciplined performance against a very formidable opponent which earned them qualification with the final match against Seychelles a mere formality,” a media statement signed by Presidential media aide Femi Adesina reads.

President Buhari said he was impressed by the team’s confidence, sense of patriotism and professionalism, and commended these attributes to all Nigerians.

Buhari also promised the Eagles support at the final tournament in Cameroon.
