Buffon: I feel sorry for Napoli and Inter

Although he has been a rival of them for much of his career, Gianluigi Buffon admitted that he was sorry to learn of Napoli and Inter’s respective Champions League eliminations.

The Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper went through from the Partenopei’s group along with Liverpool, who overcame Napoli via a lone Mohamed Salah strike in the first half.

Elsewhere, Inter were unable to beat PSV at home when a victory against the already-eliminated Dutch outfit would have been enough to see them advance, even if Buffon had something of an ulterior motive for cheering the sides on.

“It is a pity about the elimination of Napoli and Inter and I’m sorry that they are out, it is a question of pride,” the veteran told Sky Sport Italia.

“Napoli had a phenomenal campaign in a tough group and for Inter, it is a shame because a win would have been enough for them so I’m sorry to see them go out.

“If they had gotten through, it would have also given me more opportunities to return to Italy.”

Buffon’s side drew twice with Napoli in their meetings, 1-1 at the Stadio San Paolo and 2-2 at the Parc des Princes.
