Awoniyi Replaces Muffi in Super Eagles Squad

Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr has summoned Taiwo Awoniyi to replace injured Terem Moffi for their upcoming matches against Central African Republic (CAR).

The Super Eagles will face CAR in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers with the first game scheduled to be played on Thursday in Nigeria before they travel to Cameroon for the return fixture, three days later.

The call up has come as a reward for Awoniyi’s goalscoring form for Union Berlin having scored in each of the German club’s last two matches.

The Super Eagles’ official Instagram page released the following statement:

“Taiwo Awoniyi called up to replace injured Terem Moffi for the World Cup qualifier vs Central African Republic. Get well soon Terem,” a statement read.

Awoniyi, who is a former Liverpool FC player, inspired Union Berlin to a 2-1 win over Mainz 05 in the German Bundesliga encounter on Sunday.

Prior to that, the bulky marksman had netted in the Iron Ones’ 3-0 victory Maccabi Haifa in the Uefa Europa Conference League last week.

Awoniyi has done well thus far this season having netted six goals after 10 appearances across all competitions.

The 24-year-old has played for Nigeria’s under-17, under-20 and under-23 national teams.
