Yannick Bolasie Reveals Exactly Why His Partnership With Romelu Lukaku Has Been So Good for Everton

Published on: 31 October 2016

"?Everton pair Romelu Lukaku and Yannick Bolasie have struck up a fine partnership for the Toffees this season. One of the reasons behind their success, Bolasie says, seems to be their ability to communicate in a special language that their opponents cannot understand.

"We speak Lingala on the pitch," the £25m winger is quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo when asked about his blossoming and productive relationship with Lukaku.

Both players, while born and raised in Europe, have strong family ties to the Congo region of central and west Africa where the Bantu language of Lingala is spoken in various parts of several countries.

And because it's a language that is alien to nearly all Premier League defenders, except those select few with their own heritage with the Bantu peoples, it makes it difficult for opponents to know and predict what the Everton pair might do on the pitch at any given time.

"We are both very proud of our heritage," Bolasie explained.

"It really helps when we talk in our language, Lingala, and I know [Lukaku's] cousin, who plays with me for DR Congo. There aren't too many defenders in the league who speak it, so that gives us a little bit of an advantage.

"It's particularly useful because it's quick."

The relationship is certainly a productive one. Only Kevin De Bruyne has managed more Premier League assists than Bolasie's four so far this season, with all four of those have been goals scored by Lukaku.
