Watford Complete Permanent Signing of Fiorentina Foward on 2-and-a-Half Year Deal

Published on: 25 January 2017

Watford have announced the signing of Fiorentina forward Mauro Zarate on a two-and-a-half year deal.

The Hornet made the announcement via their "?official website on Wednesday, but failed to disclose the fee they had paid for the 29-year-old. Reports have suggested, however, that a fee in the region of £2m had been agreed between the two parties late last week.

Zarate returns to the Premier League for the fourth time, having previously played for West Ham United, Queens Park Rangers and Birmingham City at various points during his career.

Zarate's move to Hertfordshire had been held up for an extra day to allow for the first of a three-match suspension to take place in Tueday's Coppa Italia tie between I Viola and Napoli.

The ex-Velez Sarsfield starlet was sent off in the previous round for raking his studs down the legs of a Verona player, and was subsequently banned for three matches.

Having now only completed a one-match ban, however, it remains to be seen whether Zarate may have to sit out two matches in England before he is able to make his debut - a move which could put paid to his chances of turning out in Sunday's FA Cup fourth round clash with Millwall.

The Argentina attacker had featured just nine times for Fiorentina's first-team throughout the 2016/17 campaign, and will no doubt welcome a more regular place in Watford's starting lineup under Italian boss Walter Mazzarri.

The Watford manager has been busy trying to add new faces to his squad at Vicarage Road throughout the January transfer window as he plots a way to arrest his side's alarming slide down England's top flight, with the only other addition so far this window being the arrival of Tom Cleverley on loan from Everton.

Zarate will wear the number 20 shirt during his time with Watford.
