Watford 1-4 Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs Breach Top Four With Dominant Win Over Hornets

Published on: 31 December 2016

A dominant Tottenham dispatched a woeful Watford with ease to enter the top four on a wet afternoon at Vicarage Road.

Braces from Harry Kane and Dele Alli saw Spurs overpower Watford, who never got going and failed to force Hugo Lloris into making a meaningful save before Younes Kaboul netted a consolation.

"?A quiet opening saw Heurelho Gomes save simply from Son Heung-min's long range strike, before referee Michael Oliver waved away Spurs' appeals for a penalty after Etienne Capoue handled in the area.

Watford struggled to match Spurs, with Danny Rose the next to go close following some sumptuous football from Mauricio Pochettino's men. The England left-back latched onto a Christian Eriksen cut-back but could only shank an effort comfortably over the bar. Dele Alli was then desperately unlucky not to score, seeing a beautifully struck effort cannon back off the crossbar.

With Spurs turning the screw, it was no surprise to see them take the lead.

Kieran Trippier played an angled pass into Harry Kane, and the England international made no mistake from a tight angle, curling home with composure and confidence to give his side the initiative just 24 seconds after Alli had hit the woodwork.

On his 100th Premier League appearance Kane soon bagged another, again benefiting from an exquisite Trippier cross to bundle home from close range.

59 - Harry Kane has now scored 59 goals in 100 Premier League games, the same number as Thierry Henry had at this stage. Updated.

Tottenham looked a class apart from their Hertfordshire rivals, but Kane had to be alert defensively to clear after Toby Alderweireld's defensive header looped towards his own goal, only to be cleared his teammate. Son then went close, side-footing agonisingly wide from an Eriksen cross.

The likes of Younes Kaboul, Sebastian Prodl and Craig Cathcart looked hapless in defence, and a poor Kaboul clearance allowed Alli to pounce, controlling well before finishing calmly beyond the helpless Gomes to put the game beyond Watford before half-time.

The second half was barely a minute old when Spurs got their fourth. Alli was given the freedom of the penalty area and was picked out by Kane before controlling well and sneaking a shot past Gomes.

A rare Watford attack saw Troy Deeney flick a header into Odion Ighalo's path, but the Nigerian couldn't make the most of the position, firing high and wide. Kane seemed desperate to grab his hat-trick, replacing his side's usual free-kick taker Eriksen to force a save from Gomes with a low effort.

The game experienced a expected lull during the second half, with substitutions puncturing the flow of the game before Son fired over from close range. Spurs couldn't hold onto their clean sheet, however, with some serious pinball action resulting in Kaboul stabbing home from inside the six-yard box.

The win sees Tottenham breach the top four, moving above Manchester City on goal difference, while their bitter rivals Arsenal can usurp them in the league table by beating Crystal Palace later on Sunday. The defeat means Watford slip to 13th, below West Ham on goal difference.
