Randy Waldrum, head coach of the Falcons, has disclosed the rationale behind his choice to sideline Asisat Oshoala in Monday’s Olympic Games qualifier against the Cameroon Indomitable Lionesses, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The reigning African women’s Player of the Year to the surprise of many was dropped to the bench as Waldrum instead opted for Tenerife forward, Esther Okoronkwo in the starting lineup.

Okoronkwo validated the coach’s confidence by scoring the decisive goal in the 14th minute.

Oshoala was subsequently introduced in the second half.

When questioned about his decision post-match, Waldrum affirmed that he selected the best lineup for the game.

“We put out what we believed was the strongest eleven to start the match. Nonetheless, we have full confidence in every player. We had some players who didn’t see minutes but are entirely capable of contributing to our team,” stated the American coach.
