Veteran coach E.K Afranie is backing under-performing Christian Atsu to light up Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations after a frustrating loan spell at Everton.

The Chelsea player has struggled for game time since moving to the Toffees last summer.

Atsu has also seen his starting role in the Black Stars taken by Solomon Asante who has been excellent in Ghana’s last three games.

But despite the tough period Atsu is going through Afranie insists he is one to look out for in the Black Stars set up.

“Atsu has had little playing time at club level but he has what it takes become great,” Afranie told GHANASoccernet.com.

“For me he is a genius and when you look at his performance leading up to the world cup qualification you don’t need to be a coach to tell he has something special in him.

“He has struggled in recent times but I see him as one who will be key to our ambitions because he also has a point to prove.”

Atsu has asked to be excused from Ghana’s camp in Accra but should join his colleagues in Seville when the team moves to Spain.
